About 3 years ago, when I first learned the purposes and roles of the different macros (carbs, protein, and fat) and the quantities I needed to take based on my body, I started to experiment on myself.
I stuck to my designated macros as much as I could. All I can say is that...
It. Sucked.
On one hand, my performance at the gym was awesome! New records all day! But my experience with food started getting distorted.
I tried different ways to make it suck less. First, I manually tracked them on 📝. That didn't last very long as it was too tedius. (Imagine going to a restaurant with a portable scale. People look at you like 🤨) Then I tried using (several) apps 📱 to help me track them.
That helped keep me on track. But then as the months went on, I noticed 2 things:
1. I was starting to "slip" and felt shame & guilt whenever I did
2. I started to have a distorted relationship with food. I wasn't eating for pleasure at all. I was eating for fuel; for survival. I didn't enjoy the process one bit.
Fast forward to last year, I decided to try Intuitive Eating. I still remember my macros from years ago but they're more like guidelines. If I hit them, great; it's a little off, it's not a big deal.
Consequently, my experiences with food became so much more enjoyable. Eating is more fun! And not only was I guilt-free about eating, but I had less stress to deal with on a daily basis!
You can imagine: less stress means a more positive look at everything else in life. I became more productive at work, and my training became more focused.
Not to say that everything became 🌈🦄🌈 but at least I had one less thing to be miserable about.
